BOOK CLUB ENGAGEMENTS

As a debut novelist, Rajinderpal S. Pal has had the privilege of engaging with numerous book clubs who’ve chosen However Far Away for their discussions. He deeply values these opportunities to connect directly with readers, offering insights into his writing process and the cultural nuances woven into his story. These sessions, provide a unique and enriching experience for both the author and the book club members.

Rajinderpal would be happy to join your book club discussion for However Far Away, either by Zoom, Google Meets, or in-person, if schedules and geography allow. Since releasing the novel in August 2024, he has joined several meetings, book clubs that are privately run and others run by organisations, community groups or bookstores. Please give him lots of notice if you are interested in having him attend your meeting.

“It is heartwarming to connect with a group of book lovers who have read However Far Away with care and attention. The questions posed in these sessions are always eye-opening, giving me a sense of how my novel is impacting readers, their thoughts on the structure and character motives, as well as what they discovered about the Sikh culture.”

Reviews of Live Performances

Filling Station, Issue 027, 2003

“At the (last?) (orange) reading, Pal read poetry from PULSE with audio accompaniment from the Tar Disaster Project. I am not a person who knows the technical aspects of music; however, I can tell you Pal’s poetry absolutely shimmered in the midst of the audio trickery. Behind a backdrop of sustained and digitally altered guitar lines, Pal’s poetry floated across the room. The sonority of his voice and the measure of his speech weighed against the glowing drones of synthesizers and quiet squalls of guitar lines.” — Dean Hetherington

The Calgary Herald, October 19, 1998 and November 13, 1998

“Local poet Rajinderpal S. Pal, wowed the Friday night Poetry Bash in Calgary, reading from his recently published collection ‘pappaji wrote poetry in a language i cannot read.’” “When Pal recently appeared at PanCanadian WordFest, his reading almost brought the house to its feet.”  — Susan Scott

India Currents Magazine, June 1995

“But by far the most engaging and memorable of Desh’s [Desh Pardesh Festival 1995] offerings was a reading by poet Rajinderpal Pal whose amiable and accessible delivery evoked impressions of such realism that the audience was compelled to cling to his every word. He was able to elicit in many listeners ancestral memories of the India we’ve never seen.” — Ray Deonandan

Video Poems

Rajinderpal is a strong believer in arts collaboration.

In Calgary, he was part of an innovative collective of poets, musicians, artists, and videographers who performed under the name the Tar Disaster Project. In 2019, as Rajinderpal was rediscovering his creative career, he collaborated with videographer Abir Abigail Khir on videos for several of his poems.

One of his future plans is to develop a show based on his poems incorporating music, film and a live reading that could be performed at literary and arts festivals. He views these collaboration projects as a way to connect with audiences who may not attend more traditional poetry events.
